When working with families involved in child custody disputes it is vital that social workers understand their specific roles and limitations. The intersection between child-parent relationships, mental health, law, high conflict relationships, legal procedures, and ethical guidelines is fraught with challenges. We can be most supportive of our clients when we are clear about our roles and boundaries. We will review the basic laws and ethical guidelines around social workers’ involvement with child custody cases, including working with Guardian Ad Litems, attorneys, and courts.
