Recorded Webinar - Advanced Ethical Issues for Mandated Reporters of Child Maltreatment

May 17, 2022

3 ethics CEUs for social workers

Presented by Kathryn Krase, PhD, JD, MSW

About this workshop

Mental and Behavioral Health Professionals throughout the United States are mandated reporters of suspected child maltreatment. However, our legal requirement to report is often confusing to navigate in relation to our other professional and ethical responsibilities. This workshop is intended for mental and behavioral health who already have a basic understanding of their obligations as mandated reporters and want to explore areas that are complicated by our professional relationships with clients in light of our legal obligations. Specifically, we will explore informed consent practices with different client populations, supporting practice with clients after making a report, and how to work with child protective services, especially in light of concerns for racial and social justice in the child welfare system.

Learning Objectives

Participants will identify the ethical/ moral and legal conundrums faced when making the decision to report.

Participants will apply a framework to guide the process of working with clients before making a report. Participants will apply a framework to guide the process of working with clients after making a report. Participants will demonstrate skills at collaborating with child protective services for the benefit of clients.

Participants will demonstrate ways to advocate for improved child protective services systems.

About the presenter

Kathryn Krase, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., Principal Consultant with Krase Consultant, is an expert on the professional reporting of suspected child maltreatment. She has authored multiple books and articles on the subject. She has years of experience consulting with government and community-based organizations to develop policy & practice standards.

Advancing social justice is a core value of the social work profession; join us in engaging in legislative advocacy and learning about advocating within your own sphere - your school, workplace, and community.

This summer we have seen mass mobilization in response to the racism and violence of current systems of policing. There is and has been an urgent need for change, both in policing and our entire criminal justice system. This Advocacy Day will focus on actions to establish systems where no person is disposable, where safety & self-determination are centered, and where perpetrators of harm have opportunities for restoration and transformation.

We will explore federal, state, and local level policy including qualified immunity, police reform bills introduced in the Ohio legislator, and voter information. Attendees will walk away with specific action steps to take in an effort to move forward favorable legislation.

Other forms of essential advocacy including direct action, such as protesting, and creating change within social work will also be covered. We will critically examine social workers' participation in punitive systems and how we can push for an anti-oppressive model of social work within our own places of work.

When working with families involved in child custody disputes it is vital that social workers understand their specific roles and limitations.  The intersection between child-parent relationships, mental health, law, high conflict relationships, legal procedures, and ethical guidelines is fraught with challenges.  We can be most supportive of our clients when we are clear about our roles and boundaries.  We will review the basic laws and ethical guidelines around social workers’ involvement with child custody cases, including working with Guardian Ad Litems, attorneys, and courts.
