NASW Ohio denounces Trump Administration's zero tolerance policy

We are deeply troubled by what we are seeing of the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy here in Ohio. The two workplace raids this month have disrupted entire communities, harming children and families and straining an already strained human services system. The raids directly contradict the social work profession’s core values of social justice, dignity and worth of the person, and the importance of human relationships.

Social worker and NASW member Kathryn Ress has been on the ground providing support to children and families still reeling from having their loved ones detained with the possibility of deportation. “The dehumanization and trauma experienced by this population is beyond belief. Our hearts are broken for the people in these communities whose lives are shattered.”

Enough is enough. ICE is violently arresting hard-working Ohioans, separating them from their families. With an underfunded child welfare system that is already struggling to keep up, it is unconscionable that ICE has left dozens more children without caregivers.

NASW Ohio will continue to stand in solidarity with the affected immigrant communities, working to mobilize social workers and interrupt the cycle of trauma that this policy has started. The Association calls on the Trump Administration to reverse the “zero tolerance” policy and instead treat refugees and people seeking asylum humanely and ethically.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, representing 600,000 social workers nationwide and nearly 30,000 in Ohio. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards for social workers, and to advance sound social policies.
