Joining Forces for Children

About the Workshop:

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma and child adversity affect parents and caregivers as well as children in our world today. We know that what has happened to parents in their past affects the way the parent-child relationship and the way children are raised. We will discuss the intergenerational transmission of toxic stress, trauma and child adversity and the impact this has with child development, including social-emotional factors.

Participants will leave this workshop with an understanding of the impacts of ACEs, trauma, toxic stress and child adversity on parenting along with an understanding of the powerful interventions aimed to encourage hope and resilience in parents. Joining Forces for Children will be introduced as a community-wide and systemic response to ACEs in the Greater Cincinnati region.

Workshop outcomes:

  • Attendees will be oriented to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress.
  • Brain science and the importance of the parent-child relationship will be explored.
  • Tactics to engage parents to understand how what happened to them can affect their parenting will be reviewed.
  • Methods to encourage hope and resilience, two key factors to overcome ACEs and toxic stress, will be discussed.
  • Joining Forces for Children, developed by Mayerson Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2014, will be introduced as community-wide systemic response to ACEs in the Greater Cincinnati region.
  • Participants will be invited to learn about ways to engage and join in on this exciting work.

Presentation team includes: Joining Forces co-directors (community) include Jill Huynh and Erika Yingling along with leaders, Alison Savage and Dr. Robert Shapiro of CCHMC, Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children.
