Child Sexual Abuse: Answering 8 Crucial Questions (1-2:30 p.m.)

Part 1 will address common questions and misinformation about Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). Are two and three-year-olds capable of disclosing CSA? How easily can they be coerced into lying about CSA? What are the indicators of a true story versus a lie? What do scientific studies tell us about memory and language in young children? Also, can a CSA victim safely visit with the offending parent if the visit is supervised? What are the best practices in supervising these visits? If Children Services says a CSA allegation is unsubstantiated, does that mean it doesn't happen? What is the role of the forensic interviewer in deciding whether CSA happened? How can social workers best advocate for children who are CSA survivors? Participants will receive three fact sheets with citations to use when advocating for clients.

Child Torture: Recognizing and Responding (2:30-4 p.m.)

Part 2 will discuss the phenomenon of Child Torture (CT), the most severe form of child abuse that includes physical abuse, psychological abuse, and intentional neglect in an environment of power and control. Participants will learn about child torture as a domestic and intrafamilial phenomenon, will review and analyze real case studies in CT, and learn to plan appropriate interventions in the child welfare and mental health systems.
