Child Abuse/Neglect & Prevention

BRYCS Webinar on “Foreign Language Interpreting for Interviews on Suspected Child Abuse & Neglect” will take place July 14, 2010, 12:00 noon-1:00pm EST. Dr. Lisa Fontes will be presenting.

This Webinar, designed for people serving as interpreters in interviews regarding suspected child abuse and neglect with refugee and immigrant children and families, will:
  • Outline best practices for interviewing in these sensitive circumstances;
  • Let interpreters know what they should expect in the content and process of an interview regarding child abuse
  • Help interpreters avoid common errors that might invalidate an interview regarding child abuse.
The target audiences include professional interpreters, refugee resettlement staff, and others who may be asked to interpret a child abuse interview with a refugee or immigrant child or family member. It is intended primarily for those who interpret interviews with victims and witnesses rather than alleged offenders.
Dr. Lisa Fontes, BRYCS Technical Assistance Consultant, is the author of the books Child Abuse and Culture and Interviewing Clients across Cultures, and is the lead author of BRYCS’ curriculum Preventing Child Maltreatment in ORR-Funded Care Programs.
